Training volunteers can be an expensive endeavor. In light of this, The
Curriculum Advisory Committee has compiled the following “tips” to keep
costs down.
- When issuing a manual to a volunteer put a sticker on the back that
says “Property of _________CASA/GAL program.” That way the volunteer is
more likely to return it if, and/or, when they leave the program.
- Only give out a chapter at a time of the manual, so those who don’t
finish the training won’t have the entire manual.
- Do not copy all of chapter two of the manual for every volunteer.
Instead have a legal reference copy available at the office. This chapter
has many laws that volunteers will not need to reference after you have
reviewed it with them in class.
Free or low cost printing ideas:
- University Extension programs and community colleges: many have to
provide support to the community as a part of their mandate. Seek their
support to provide the volunteer training.
- City and government offices, utility companies and newspaper
publishers often give to non-profits in-kind services or support like
printing and duplication.
- Laminate items you plan to reuse; you can laminate flip chart pages
you will reuse. A copy center can enlarge papers into posters for you as
well as laminate them for longevity.
- Get small numbers of the manual photocopied at variety of places such
as schools, churches and small businesses. For a smaller program or
smaller training groups, this could fill the need.
- Thank your donors. Insert a page into the front of the manual thanking
any donors who assisted with the project. They will be more willing to do
it again f they are recognized.
