Select the file(s) you want to back up

It is very important to regularly back up the CometDBV4.mdb file, which is the file that contains all the Comet data. If you have used Comet Tools to build your own queries, you will also want to back up that file. You will not need to back up any other Comet files.

Select the file(s) you want to back up

Right-click on the Start button. Choose “Explore”.

On the left side of the Exploring window, find the Comet folder where the data file is stored. You may have to drag the center scroll bar to scroll up to the top of the directory of folders. The data file will be in the CometV4 folder on the C: drive if you are not running Comet on a network system. If you are running Comet on a network, and are not sure where the data file is stored, open Comet and look at the Database File path on the main menu.

Select the CometV4 folder.

On the right side of the Exploring window, select the CometDBV4.mdb file

Copy the file

Select Edit/Copy from the top menu.

Note: The CometDBV4.mdb file will probably get too large to be able to copy it directly to a floppy disk in the A:\drive. You can use either a CD burner (fairly standard on most new computers) or a Zip drive. You would need to follow instructions on copying files supplied with the burner or zip drive.

However, if do not have a CD burner or a zip drive and you have Windows XP (2002) or higher, you can use the compressed file function to zip the CometDBV4 file. Highlight file then on the Toolbar Select - File – Send to: Compressed Folder.

Or you can use a program called WinZip, which you can download at www.winzip.com. The WinZip registration cost is about $30. WinZip comes with a very good tutorial about how you can zip, or compress, your files. If you use WinZip to compress a file, copy the compressed file, which looks like it has a vise on it, to your floppy. Questions about the WinZip program should be addressed to WinZip.

Go to the directory to which you want to copy the backup.

Use the Exploring window to find and select the Zip drive. If you are using WinZip, you can select the A:\ drive.

Paste the copied file(s) to the back up directory.

From the menu, choose Edit/Paste. Label the zip disk or floppy disk with the date of the backup.

It is a good idea to rotate back up disks so that you have at least two copies of the CometDBV4.mdb data file.
