About the National CASA Association Board of Directors

The Board of Directors carries out the aims and purposes of the Association, promotes its programs, upholds the Association Standards and Code of Ethics, and manages and controls all of its property and assets.


COMPOSITION: The Board consists of not less than fifteen nor more than thirty members The Board includes the officers (President, 2 Vice Presidents, Secretary and Treasurer) who are elected by voting members; five at-large representatives elected by voting members, and up to 20 additional appointed members. The Board is composed of individuals from the corporate and non-profit sectors, volunteer CASAs/GALs, representatives of CASA/GAL Programs, social services, the judiciary and legal communities, and shall be culturally and ethnically diverse.


TERM OF OFFICE: Board Members serve two year terms. Members may serve for two consecutive terms in the same position.


ORIENTATION: An orientation is provided for new Board Members -- usually a half day session prior to a full Board Meeting.


TIME COMMITMENT: The Board of Directors meet in person three times a year, usually in early spring, early fall, and during the National CASA Association Annual Conference (April or May). Board meetings normally last one full day. Additional time depends on Board Committee involvement. Board committees occasionally meet in person, but generally meet by conference call.


BOARD COMMITTEES: The Board may designate and appoint one or more standing or temporary committees. The President appoints committee Chairs, and the members of a committee are appointed by the Chairperson. Current Standing Committees of the National CASA Board are: Resource Development, Finance, Nominations, Personnel, Diversification, Standards, and Education and Public Awareness.


COMPENSATION: Board Members of National CASA Association serve in a voluntary capacity. They are reimbursed for their travel and per diem expenses when they travel on Association-related business as per the Association Travel Policy.


FINANCIAL COMMITMENT: Board members must be individual members of the Association and are expected to make a personal financial contribution.


INSURANCE COVERAGE: Washington state law and the Association Bylaws indemnify the Board, and National CASA maintains Directors and Officers insurance coverage in the amount of $1million for Board members.


DOCUMENTATION: Criminal records checks are conducted on all Board Members. Board Members must sign a certification that they will not receive a salary or other compensation from National CASA or National CASA-administered grants.

Additional Responsibilities of National CASA Association Board Members:


To commit to furthering the goals and objectives of National CASA by actively participating in meetings, serving on committees, advising staff, keeping apprised of pertinent issues, responding to the CASA network's concerns, and making themselves available when called upon to assist with Association endeavors.


To take a leadership role in promoting the CASA concept and in addressing issues before the Board.


To set policy and direction for the NCASAA staff to implement.


To participate in long and short term planning to ensure that the Association's policies and activities are moving National CASA Association closer to the goal of a CASA for every abused and neglected child who needs one.


To provide fiscal oversight and accountability to ensure that Association resources are used wisely and consistent with federal and private funding requirements. To assist in public and private resource development activities.


TO KEEP NCASAA FOCUSED, IN ALL OF ITS POLICIES AND ACTIVITIES, ON WHO THE ULTIMATE RECIPIENT OF OUR SERVICES AND THOSE OF THE CASA NETWORK IS: THE CHILDREN.


Oath of Office for Board Members:

I solemnly promise... that I will preserve, protect, defend, and promote...the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association...to enhance the integrity and professionalism of its members... in their responsibilities as children's advocates... to ensure that each child's right...to a safe, permanent home...is acted on by the court...in a sensitive and expedient manner."
