If you don't set goals you have nothing to work toward
Types of Planning
Weekly
Don't underestimate the importance of weekly meetings with staff and board president or
court administrator.
Short-term
Workplans for agency operations. Both board and staff should be involved in the
identification and implementation of agency workplans.
SWOT - Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats
Workplan should include:
- Objectives - What you want to achieve
- Action Steps - How you will achieve it
- Person(s) Responsible - Who will achieve it
- Time Frames - When you will achieve it
Strategic or Long-Range
- Should be board driven with staff input at critical stages
- Should be more comprehensive than workplan
- Should establish where you want to be in 5-10 years and how it will be accomplished
Financial
- Make certain you are currently managing what you have well
- Make certain you have developed an annual budget and stick to it
- Make certain you have your financial records reviewed by an independent person -
preferably a CPA
Staffing Needs
- Plan for adequate program staff and administrative staff
- Maintain a manageable caseload of both volunteers and children being served
- Follow NCASAA's recommendations of a 30/1 volunteer/supervisor ratio and a caseload of
no more than two or three cases per volunteer simultaneously
Personnel Management
The most effective way to manage personnel is to first develop a structure
- Personnel Policies
- Job Descriptions
- Evaluations
- Grievance Procedures
- Personnel Files
- Time Sheets
