The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) has developed "Because... Somebody Loves Me," a workbook for children, 6 to 10 years of age, who are facing the loss of parent to HIV/AIDS. Children living in families affected by HIV/AIDS often experience such emotions as loss, grief, anger, sadness, and confusion.

This workbook is designed is to give young children a way of expressing and exploring these complex feelings.

The workbook follows the same format that is used in support work with children.

The beginning and end are gentle exercises that focus on the child in a positive way and cushion those pages in the middle which deal more directly with the specific changes that will be occurring in the youngster's life. Questions are invited throughout and remember, there are no answers in this book. Instead, there are opportunities for the child to be heard and reminded that s/he is precious; that changes happen in life that are not their fault; that s/he is important; that s/he is not alone and there are people to help; and that s/he can look forward to the future.

The workbook was written and developed by Dottie Ward-Wimmer, Children's Program Director of the St. Francis Center in Washington, DC., with help from an advisory committee of over sixty practitioners. The workbook is part of CWLA's comprehensive initiative of developing resources, including "Because You Love Them: A Parent's Planning Guide," for those working with children and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Bulk Copies are Available

Funding for the development and distribution of the workbook came from the Levi Strauss Foundation, the AT&T Foundation, and the Chevron Corporation. CWLA is able to provide you with boxes (120 workbooks per box) at no cost.
